Coconut and Sweet Potatoes Payas

Shubh Navratri to all my readers. As we all know, the nine days of Navratri are observed with dedication and tenacity of devotion towards the Goddess. Devotees follow the practice of upwas and prefer having sativik food in their diet. It is believed that Satvik food inculcates power positivity in body and mind. Today, I will be sharing such Satvik and Upvas sepcial Payas or Upvas kheer recipe. It is not just tasty but also healthy and perfect for offering to the Goddess Durga.

Serves 2-3 persons
Preparation time: 15 mins
Baking time: 20 mins


  1. Sweet Patetoes (grated) : One and half Cup
  2. Dry Coconut (grated) : half Cup
  3. Fresh coconut-grated :half cup
  4. Cashews: 1/4th Cup
  5. Nutmeg Powder: half tsp
  6. Full cream Milk Or Coconut Milk: One and half cup (approximately)
  7. Jaggery/Brown Sugar : 2 tbsp
  8. Sugar: 3 tbsp (approximately or as per your taste)
  9. Kesar/Saffron
  10. Ghee/clarified butter: 2 tbsp


In a sauce pan add ghee cashews, dry coconut, sweet potatoes and saffron. Saute till grated sweet potato is soft. Now just add 1/4 cup milk and fresh grated coconut. Let it simmer on medium to low heat for a couple of minutes. Add more milk if it is becomes very thick. In about 5 minutes fresh coconut will be cooked well. Now turn off the gas flame and with the help of a hand blender grind everything. You can also transfer it to a mixing jar blend them in a mixer (just be careful that the Payas mix is not very hot while using a mixer-grinder). Now turn on the flame and add rest of the milk and let it simmer for a couple of minutes till ghee starts appearing on the top. In the end add sugar, jaggery and nutmeg powder. Keep stiring till the jaggery and sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from the flame and garnish with Saffron stands. This Payas can be served both ways, warm and cool.
